How Are Tinctures Made (Is This Normal?)
One of the preferred ways I take kratom is through tincture extracts. Because so many vendors now aren't taking CCs, I'm trying out some new vendors that do.
Just got some new tinctures in the mail from a vendor, and they don't smell like/have the same consistency of what I'm used to. Honestly? It's been years since I smoked, but it smells like pot resin, and it's really goopy.
I'm trying to decide if this is because it was shipped from CA to CT and we have negative degrees at the moment (and it's half frozen) or if this is bad product... OR... what I normally get is bad product and this is normal.. LOL. Any ideas? thanks!
Yes, I'm indoors now, but this was sent via priority mail and was delayed a day due to the blizzard. So my guess is, at least today, it was sitting in a cold mail truck for 10-12 hours and I don't think we even reached 10 degrees today. Even though there is alcohol in tincture, I wouldn't be surprised if it half-froze 🙁
An hour after I brought in the package, the tinctures were still really cold. I put them on a dark shelf and I'm going to take another look at them in the morning.
Thanks for the tip though on taking less of this stuff. I administer the tincture doses via eyedropper, so I can easily start out with just a few droplets.
So, one day later...
Been at room temp for ~24 hours. I'm definitely harnessing my 20s here, but it tastes like bongwater.
Not super sure I can stomach this stuff. Do people normally drink tincture in a drink? I was rather enjoying the flavour of what I was getting.
But I have $50 worth of stuff here and dammit, I'm going to find a way to use it. LOL
What you can do if your tinctures ever get too cold like that is slowly heat them up in a water bath on the stove. First, make sure your tincture is in a glass jar, preferably a mason jar with a lid on it. Fill the pot with enough water to submerse the tincture, but not let it sit on the bottom of the pot. Get your water to about 200 degrees or almost boiling, but not fully boiling. Then just hold it in the water and let it heat up. Shaking it will help diffuse the heat/cold also. The heat will help bring the tincture "back to life" since if it froze or got too cold, the bonding will have broken. Just keep it under boiling, and wait for it to cool before consuming.
I have had the alcohol based kratom tinctures, and have made my own. They are incredibly hard to stomach, even if made right. The alcohol never fully evaporates no matter how much you boil it off, so there will always be a kick to it.
The "goopyness" could be due to it getting too cold. Try heating it up and that should help.
